چکیده

The 13hr XMM-Newton/Chandra deep survey is the first of two extremely deep XMM-Newton fields observed by the XMM-OM consortium. A 120 ks Chandra mosaic, covering 0.2 deg, provides sensitive, confusion-free point source detection with sub-arcsecond positions, while the 200 ks XMM-Newton observation provides high quality X-ray spectroscopy over the same sky area. We have optical spectroscopic identifications for 70 X–ray sources. Of these, 42 are broad emissionline AGN with a wide range of redshifts. The optical counterparts of a further 23 sources are narrow emission line galaxies and absorption line galaxies. These 23 sources all lie at z < 1 and typically have lower X–ray luminosities than the broad-line AGN. About half of them show significant X–ray absorption and are almost certainly intrinsically absorbed AGN. However some of them have unabsorbed, AGN-like, power-law components in their X–ray spectra, but do not show broad emission lines in their optical spectra. These sources may be weak, unobscured AGN in bright galaxies and their existence at low redshifts could be a consequence of the strong cosmological evolution of AGN characteristic luminosities.

Radio observations of the XMM - Newton / Chandra 13 hr deep survey field

Our VLA observations of the XMM-Newton/Chandra 13hr deep survey field (see Page et al., this proceedings) result in one of the two deepest 1.4GHz radio maps ever made. Within the 15′ radius field covered by the deep X-ray data (0.19 deg), a total of 556 radio sources are detected, down to a 4σ flux limit of 28μJy. Of the 214 Chandra sources, 55 have radio counterparts. The sub-arcsecond accurac...

Exploring the Early Universe with Xmm - Newton

The question of the X-ray background has been largely settled over the last 10 years using the ROSAT satellite. About 70-80 % of the soft X-ray background was resolved into discrete sources, which are mainly X-ray and optically unobscured AGNs (Quasars, Sy1). Furthermore we found already several obscured AGNs in deep ROSAT surveys, which are predicted by the population synthesis models for the ...

The HELLAS2XMM survey IV. Optical identifications and the evolution of the accretion luminosity in the Universe

We present results from the photometric and spectroscopic identification of 122 X-ray sources recently discovered by XMM-Newton in the 2–10 keV band (the HELLAS2XMM 1dF sample). Their flux cover the range 8 × 10−15−4 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1 and the total area surveyed is 0.9 square degrees. One of the most interesting results (which is found also in deeper sourveys) is that about 20% of the hard X...

The Challenge to Large Optical Telescopes from X-ray Astronomy

In the ROSAT era of the mid-1990’s, the problems facing deep X-ray surveys could be largely solved with 10 m class telescopes. In the first decade of this new millennium, with X-ray telescopes such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory and XMM-Newton in operation, deep X-ray surveys are challenging 10 m telescopes. For example, in the Chandra Deep Field surveys, ≈ 30% of the X-ray sources have optic...

Wide Area X-ray Surveys for AGN and Starburst Galaxies

While often the point sources in X-ray surveys are dominated by AGN, with the high sensitivity of modern X-ray telescopes such as Chandra and XMM-Newton normal/starburst galaxies are also being detected in large numbers. We have made use of Bayesian statistics for both the selection of galaxies from deep X-ray surveys and in the analysis of the luminosity functions for galaxies. These technique...
